Another great day of hiking in the books!
The weather could not have been better and we had fresh snow to make "first tracks" on our trek to the falls. Laughing Whitefish Falls is on the Laughing Whitefish River. It isn't exactly a spectacular waterfall in the winter because its veil-like water flow is so wide and shallow that it completely freezes over on the surface. The only trace of the falls is the sound of the water running beneath the blanket of ice. Still, the views on this wilderness hike are wonderful.
The real fun to be had... sliding down the area's many stairway steps when covered with lots of snow and playing on the opposite side of the falls where water is slowly leaching through a sandstone wall to make an ice flow and "mini ice cave." Fun in the snow . . . yet another reason to "Take a Hike" in the U.P.!
